Have you ever wondered why sometimes there are 2 candles lit, and at other times there are 4? First of all, remember that all candles are used to remind us that Jesus Christ is present with us as we are gathered in His name, and that He is the Light of the world. The torches (the candles alongside the lectern) are always lit, reminding us that Christ is with us and speaks to us through His Word. In the services when we have the Lord’s Supper, the candles on the altar are lit to remind us that Christ comes to us in the Lord’s Supper. So sometimes there are 4 candles lit, and sometimes 2.
